The station was on the old North London line, opening in 1847 as the terminus of the railway with a grand building for the station. However, as the area declined, the station building closed in 1979, to be replaced by a much smaller "shed" next door, while the grand building was turned into a railway museum.

In 1979 the railway was refurbished and a new North Woolwich station was built just around the corner. The old building was given to a Trust and turned into a railway museum. After King George V DLR station opened, the railway line and the new station closed completely. Sadly the museum closed too in 2008.

The former North Woolwich Old Station Museum site has been sold off - to a church and registered charity just over the other side of the River Thames. The grand old building has been standing empty since 2008 and had been severely vandalised and falling into disrepair for many years.
